MIR132 encodes a microRNA (miRNA), a short 20–24 nucleotide noncoding RNA that post-transcriptionally regulates gene expression by influencing mRNA stability and translation. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts, cleaved by Drosha into an approximately 70-nucleotide stem-loop precursor, and further processed by cytoplasmic Dicer into mature miRNA and antisense miRNA* products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into RISC, which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing and typically represses translation or destabilizes the target mRNA. The RefSeq record represents the predicted MIR132 microRNA stem-loop.
