MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20–24 nucleotide) noncoding RNAs that regulate gene expression post-transcriptionally by affecting mRNA stability and translation. They are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs), which may be protein-coding or noncoding. Pri-miRNAs are cleaved by the RNase III enzyme Drosha to produce approximately 70-nucleotide stem-loop precursor miRNAs (pre-miRNAs), which are further cleaved by cytoplasmic Dicer to yield mature miRNA and antisense miRNA* products. Mature miRNA is incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing and most often leads to translational repression or destabilization of the target mRNA. This RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop. [Provided by RefSeq, Sep 2009]
