MIR6721 represents a predicted microRNA stem-loop. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short, 20–24-nucleotide noncoding RNAs that post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting mRNA stability and translation. They are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as parts of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs), which can be protein-coding or noncoding. Drosha RNase III cleaves pri-miRNAs to generate approximately 70-nucleotide stem-loop pre-miRNAs, which cytoplasmic Dicer further processes into mature miRNAs and antisense miRNA* products. Mature miRNAs are incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs by imperfect base pairing and most commonly causes translational repression or destabilization of the target mRNA.
