MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20–24 nt) noncoding RNAs that participate in post-transcriptional regulation of gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting both mRNA stability and translation. They are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as parts of capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs), which may be protein-coding or noncoding. The primary transcript is cleaved by the RNase III enzyme Drosha to produce an approximately 70-nucleotide stem-loop precursor miRNA (pre-miRNA), which is further processed by cytoplasmic Dicer to generate mature miRNA and antisense miRNA star (miRNA*) products. Mature miRNA is incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing and most often leads to translational inhibition or destabilization of the target mRNA. For MIR6849, RefSeq represents the predicted microRNA stem-loop.
