MIR8054 is represented in RefSeq as a predicted microRNA stem-loop. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are short (20–24 nt) noncoding RNAs that post-transcriptionally regulate gene expression in multicellular organisms by affecting mRNA stability and translation. miRNAs are transcribed by RNA polymerase II as capped and polyadenylated primary transcripts (pri-miRNAs), which may be protein-coding or noncoding. Pri-miRNAs are cleaved by the RNase III enzyme Drosha to produce ~70-nt stem-loop precursor miRNAs (pre-miRNAs), which are further cleaved by cytoplasmic Dicer to generate mature miRNA and antisense miRNA* products. The mature miRNA is incorporated into the RNA-induced silencing complex (RISC), which recognizes target mRNAs through imperfect base pairing with the miRNA and most commonly leads to translational repression or destabilization of the target mRNA.
