Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondria. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit. Unlike prokaryotic ribosomes, which are RNA-rich, mitoribosomes have a protein-to-rRNA ratio of approximately 75%, and they lack 5S rRNA. Due to significant sequence divergence across species, these proteins often share biochemical properties but exhibit low sequence homology, making identification difficult. This gene encodes a protein component of the 28S subunit that likely functions as a partner to death-associated protein 3 (DAP3). Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms. [Provided by RefSeq, Nov 2013]
