This gene encodes a protein with an N-terminal RNA-binding motif and four C-terminal SRGY (serine, arginine, glycine, tyrosine) boxes. Multiple copies of this gene occur in the AZFb azoospermia factor region of the Y chromosome, and the encoded protein is thought to participate in spermatogenesis. Most copies at this locus are pseudogenes; six highly similar copies containing full-length ORFs are considered functional. Four functional copies lie within inverted repeat IR2, and two functional copies are found in palindrome P3, along with two copies of PTPN13-like, Y-linked.
