This gene encodes a protein with an N-terminal RNA-binding motif and four C-terminal SRGY (serine, arginine, glycine, tyrosine) boxes. Multiple copies of this gene are found in the AZFb azoospermia factor region of the Y chromosome, and the encoded protein is thought to be involved in spermatogenesis. Most copies at this locus are pseudogenes, while six highly similar copies with full-length ORFs are considered functional. Four functional copies occur within inverted repeat IR2, and two functional copies are found in palindrome P3, along with two Y-linked PTPN13-like copies. [Provided by RefSeq, Jul 2008]
