The protein encoded by this gene is a major constituent of semen. This secreted protein participates in the formation of the gel matrix that entraps ejaculated sperm. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) proteolytically processes the protein into smaller peptides, each potentially possessing distinct functions. This proteolytic process liquefies the gel matrix, thereby facilitating increased sperm motility. Additionally, the antimicrobial peptide SGI-29, derived from this protein, exhibits antibacterial activity. [Provided by RefSeq, Nov 2014]
