[Rare manifestations of giant cell arteritis].

Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a large-vessel vasculitis commonly affecting those above the age of 50 years. GCA presents with systemic inflammation and/or local ischemic symptoms, including the risk of visual loss. Scalp and lingual ischemia are rare but severe manifestations of GCA that can lead to delayed diagnosis and treatment, resulting in increased morbidity and mortality. Here we report the cases of two elderly women presenting with necrosis of the scalp and tongue respectively - emphasizing the need to suspect and identify the various manifestations of this complex disease. Treatment remains aligned with current GCA guidelines, including corticosteroid therapy and in certain cases the addition of tocilizumab or upadacitinib.
