Role of Staphylococcus aureus exfoliatin toxin in staphylococcal infections in mice.

Abstract

Clindamycin at a concentration of 0.18 microgram/ml reduced growth of Staphylococcus aureus in vitro by 40% but inhibited exfoliatin toxin production by 90%. Mice infected with S. aureus and subsequently treated with clindamycin did not exfoliate but still died.
